Cookies aren't complicated things to bake and normally they all have the same basic ingrediets. Flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, butter, eggs and vanilla extract crop up in just about all recipes. These are the basic ingredients. If you want to add in other ingredients you can have a lot of fun with chocolate chips, spices, oatmeal, nuts and raisins.
When it comes to creating the perfect taste, texture and appearance you need to adhere to the steps that are listed in the recipe. Having a good understanding about the techniques, tools and ingredients involved is important. If you don't understand the recipe then you'll have problems.
Use the correct impliments for measuring the ingredients. If you don't have a good set of scales you won't be able to have the correct amounts of everything. If you have too much of one ingredietn and not enough of another your cookies might not be what you wanted them to be.
When mixing up the ingredients in the bowl, make sure you don't overdo the mixing because it messes up with the gluten.
Be careful about the length of time they spend in the oven. Some recipes from old cookery books have the temperature listed for old ovens rather than the modern-day fan ovens. So make sure you adjust the temperature accordingly.
Of course, the more often you bake cookies the better you will get at it. There's always something that can be improved and you'll only find this out through experience. You might also find that personally you don't like certain ingredients such as the spices and nuts.
